It is called open source because you have the freedom to use, distribute and modify. The soruce code is there and ayou can modify that to suit your needs.

here is an excerpt from the first page on opensource.org:
Code:
The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale.
There's an expression: "free, as in free beer"
that means it's a good thing!!!
 8)

Open source is about freedom. Unlike the case of proprietary which does not open its source codes, open source can be enhanced or customized. Instead of resorting to piracy, you might as well use open source applications.

all the above are true... tradiitonally it had been a practice for the software developer to stick to their source code and not share it.... so that the consumer cannot modify or use the code elsewhere..

that all changed when linus trivaldo started a group project and came up with the graphical version of the then unix operating system... linux branch out from minix by andrew tananbaum (a good professor in the computing and networking field).... since sharing of source code to facilitate development was a main aim.... the source code was made open for any body to see...

hence linux called open source.
