Fortress language demo is planned
Sun Microsystems on Friday plans to demonstrate the Fortress programming language, described as a general purpose, component-based language for building high-performance software with high programmer productivity. The demonstration, which will feature implicit parallelism, is planned for an open house at Sun offices in Menlo Park, Calif. The name Fortress is derived from an intent to produce a secure Fortran, resulting in a language for high-performance computation that provides abstraction and type safety on par with modern programming language principles, according to a Sun research paper. But Fortress is a new language with little relation to Fortran. Fortress is intended to be a growable language that can be extended and applied in new and unanticipated contexts. Errr, what do you mean "Fortran is back???", it never went anywhere. Its popularity was dwarfed by c and c++ , but enterprises, security, and science insitutes / companies still use it becuase its efficiant and ecspecialy good with math and graphics.
